A Marriage Prayer - Bud Henry Bowen
Bless their marriage, O God, as they begin their journey down the road of life together. We don't know what lies ahead for the road turns and bends. But help them to make the best of whatever comes their way. Help them to continue to enjoy each other as they did when they first met. Help them to realize that nothing nor no one is perfect and to look for the good in all things and all people including themselves. Help them to respect each other's likes and dislikes, opinions and beliefs, hopes and dreams and fears even though they may not always understand them. Help them to learn from each other and to help each other to grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Help them to realize that no matter what happens to them they will hold on to each other and know that things have a way of working out for the good. Help them to create for their children a peaceful, stable home of love as a foundation on which they can build their lives. But most of all, dear God, help them to keep lit the torch of love that they now share so that by their loving example they may pass on the light of love to their children and to their children's children forever. Amen.
Covenant of Love
Father in heaven, You ordained marriage for your children, and You gave us love. We present to You {Bride} and {Groom}, who come this day to be married. May the covenant of love they make be blessed with true devotion and spiritual commitment. We ask that You will give them the ability to keep the covenant they have made. When selfishness shows itself, grant generosity; when mistrust is a temptation, give moral strength; when there is misunderstanding, give patience and gentleness. If suffering becomes a part of their lives, give them a strong faith and an abiding love. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Let Us Pray
Eternal God, You are our Father and our Friend, as you have heard these words of promise just spoken, may Your Holy Spirit deepen in the minds of {Bride} and {Groom} the sense of the sacred and binding power of their vows. In Your Name these words were spoken to make these lives one, may Your rich blessing be added. Give them Your grace and guidance that they may loyally fulfill the vows they have taken. May Your joy remain with them always, may they be a blessing to each other, and to those around them, finding in the blessedness of the home life on earth a sample of the happiness of Your eternal home. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Marriage Blessing Prayer
Lord, You are our Father and our Friend, as you have heard these words of promise just spoken, may Your Holy Spirit deepen in the minds of {Bride} and {Groom} the sense of the sacred and binding power of their vows. In Your Name these words were spoken to make these lives one, may Your rich blessing be added. May the covenant of love they make be blessed with true devotion and spiritual commitment. Help them to realize that nothing nor no one is perfect and to look for the good in all things and all people, including themselves. Help them to respect each other's likes and dislikes, opinions and beliefs, hopes and dreams and fears, even though they may not always understand them. Help them to learn from each other and to help each other to grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Help them to realize that no matter what happens to them they will hold on to each other and know that things have a way of working out for the good. When selfishness shows itself, grant generosity; when mistrust is a temptation, give moral strength; when there is misunderstanding, give patience and gentleness; if suffering becomes a part of their lives, give them a strong faith and an abiding love. May they always turn to You for guidance, for strength, for provision and for direction. May they glorify You in the choices they make, and in all that they do. We ask this in {Your/Jesus’} name, Amen.
Opening Prayer
Father in heaven, You ordained marriage for your children, and You gave us love. We present to You {Bride} and {Groom}, who come this day to be married. Grant that they may be ever true and loving, living together in such a way as to never bring heartbreak into their marriage. Temper their hearts with kindness and help them to be sweethearts, helpmates, friend and guide, and together, may they meet the cares and problems of life confidently. May their home truly be a place of love and harmony where your Holy Spirit is ever-present. Lord, we give you thanks for {Bride} and {Groom}, for their open hearts and willing spirits, and for the example of love that they embody here in our presence. Be with them on this joyous occasion of showing their love and making their vows; and be with us, their witnesses, that we may all be changed by what is said and witnessed here. Bless their wedding day and walk beside them, through all their life together. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Prayer
Eternal Father, creator, redeemer, lover of our souls, we now turn to You, and as the first act of {Bride} and {Groom} in their newly formed union, we ask You to protect their home. May they always turn to You for guidance, for strength, for provision and for direction. May they glorify You in the choices they make, and in all that they do. Use them to draw others to Yourself, and let them stand as a testimony to the world of Your faithfulness. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hollowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. give us this day our daily bread, and forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The Prayer - St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226)
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is discord, union; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
Add a closing prayer at the end of the ceremony. It can be religious, spiritual, non-denominational or something familiar to you both.
